Sean T. Hanley, M.D.

Dr. Hanley specializes in complex hip and knee reconstructive surgery as well as sports medicine and shoulder surgery. He is trained in the latest techniques of primary and revision joint replacement, including the minimally invasive techniques for both the hip and knee, and has utilized them for greater than 5 years. Dr. Hanley also is trained and experienced in fracture care, complex shoulder surgery, and general orthopaedics. His sports medicine surgical skills have been honed by caring for local elite and recreational athletes for more than 30 years and are enhanced by his time as a physician for the US Olympic Team during the Summer Olympic Games in Atlanta in 1996 and at the Pan American Games in Mar Del Plata, Argentina.


Dr. Hanley is also devoted to improving the healthcare system in Maine; he is a board member of the Community Physicians of Maine, serves as the Chief of Orthopaedics at Mercy Hospital, and is the Chairman of the Dan Hanley Center for Healthcare Leadership, which is an organization founded in the memory of his father that is committed to promoting leadership in health and healthcare throughout Maine. Dr. Hanley’s father was a well-known family physician who was a US Olympic doctor for more than 20 years and was instrumental in founding many of the current healthcare organizations in Maine.


Dr. Hanley was born in Portland and raised in Brunswick and received his undergraduate degree from Bowdoin College. He received his medical training at the Tufts University School of Medicine in Boston and served his orthopaedic residency at the prestigious Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City. He then completed a sports medicine fellowship at the Atlanta Sports Medicine Clinic, where he cared for Division I athletes from Georgia Tech University. Dr. Hanley is certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is a member of the US Olympics Sports Medicine Society, The Maine Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the Maine Medical Association.


Dr. Hanley lives with his wife in Falmouth, while his 2 sons carry on the family tradition by attending college at Bowdoin. He continues to be involved in youth athletics, both as a coach and as a sports medicine physician, and in his spare time enjoys playing hockey, fishing, golfing, and skiing.
