James Kuhn, M.D.

Dr. Kuhn performs minimally invasive joint replacement of the hip and knee as well as partial knee replacement (traveling to Oxford, England to learn the technique from its developers) and arthroscopic sports medicine knee surgery. In addition, he treats many patients with fractures through his coverage of the emergency rooms at the Maine Medical Center, Mercy Hospital, and Stephens Memorial Hospital. He has used his advanced training to help Mainers overcome injury and birth deformities and has also provided charity reconstructive surgery for children with complex limb deformities brought to Portland from Guatemala, Jamaica, and the Congo.

In addition to his clinical responsibilities Dr. Kuhn has become a leader in the local orthopaedic community and served for 3 years as the chairman of the Southern Maine Orthopaedic Management Co, which is a collaborative group of local orthopaedic surgeons who co-manage the orthopaedic services at Mercy Hospital; for 2 years as the treasurer of the Maine Medical Center Medical Executive Committee; and is currently the co-chair of the Orthopaedic Integration Task Force, which coordinates efforts to improve the quality and value of orthopaedic care delivered to patients of InterMed. He also will be the only specialist in the state serving as a committee member on the State Innovation Model, a state of Maine project intended to tackle the challenges of payment reform in our medical system.

Dr. Kuhn was born in Cambridge, MA and raised near Buffalo, NY. He attended Hamilton College and then the SUNY School of Medicine in Buffalo. He served his internship at the Union Memorial Hospital in Baltimore and then his residency at George Washington University in Washington, D.C. Dr. Kuhn completed his training with a 1-year fellowship in limb reconstruction at the Maryland Center for Limb Lengthening and Reconstruction in Baltimore under the tutelage of Dr Dror Paley. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and the Maine Society of Orthopaedic Surgeons. He joined Maineortho in 1998. Dr. Kuhn lives in Falmouth with his wife and 3 children and enjoys fishing, skiing, men's hockey, and slicing golf balls in his spare time.
